There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is banned. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are apparently required to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling hall, highlights 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga casino is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel building that contains a number of conveniences on top of the gambling den, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
